Population Within a few years of conquest, of Cuba by Spanish, native population had been almost destroyed. Since Spanish conquistadors needed a lot of working hands whey started to bring slaves from central Africa. Most of them had worked on plantations. During 350 years Spanish had been imported more then 1 million of African slaves. Due to this reason more than 120.000 Chinese had been exported for Asia. In Havana still remained China - Town. Moreover had been exported Indian slaves, but less, from Yucatan, Central and South America. In addition to that Spanish had brought slaves even from India. 
There had been intensive immigration not only from Spain but also some settlers from Germany, France and Britain.More than that Cuba had accepted thousands of settlers from neighboring islands. 250 thousands of immigrants came from Haiti and Jamaica. From Spain immigrate approximately 900 thousands of settlers, but not all of them remained there. In the beginning of 20th century on Cuba settled many Americans. They created their colony on the island Pines. Very intensive immigration was during and after first and the second world war. First of all Jews immigrated on Cuba. Thus was created current Cuban nation. Nations from all over the world immigrate on this Island. Now Cuban population is 11 mln. Official source consider that the largest part of population are white people, more than 65%, black people approximately 12%, and 22% - mulatto. But another source considers that just 40% of all population is white, while 60% consist of black and mulatto. The smallest part consists of Chinese, Jews, Arabian, and Indian etc. Language of Cuban is Spanish, but pronunciation is greatly changed under influence of different languages of many nations, immigrated on Cuba. The main religion is Catholicism. Despite of participations of socialism as a social - political system prevailing in the country for many decades, Cuban people are quite religious. Even members of Cuban Communistic Party are not prohibited to attend church. But apart of Catholicism on Cuba are spread and other African and Indian primitive religions. They gave rise for many local Gods, such as. Elegua - God of Fate, Obatala - God Creator, Yamaya - god of water and land, Chiango - God of water of fire, Oguya - Goddess of Love. An interesting fact is that every pagan god is associated with one of Catholic saint. Feasts of pagan Gods match the same Catholic holydays. More than that in some Catholic Churches you can figures of pagan Gods. Art and Culture of Cuba is amazing mingle of African, Spanish and so called Afro - Cuban culture. African beat and Spanish poetic melodies in songs, Afro- Cuban rumba, amazing mingle of France and Spanish influence in art and architecture- this entire make Cuba very popular among the tourists and attract crowds of people from all other the world. |
